How to Prepare for Your Outdoor Maternity Photoshoot

By January 17, 2026No Comments

1. What to Bring to Your Session

Having the right items with you makes the session smoother and more comfortable.

Must-have items:

  • A large bag to hold all essentials and outfit extras
  • Comfortable walking shoes or sandals
  • Water to stay hydrated
  • Lip balm and blotting paper
  • Hair ties or clips (for wind or quick adjustments)

Optional but helpful:

  • A light shawl, jacket, or wrap
  • Ultrasound photos or a meaningful prop (if you’d like them included)
  • A small towel or wipes for quick touch-ups

A bigger bag helps keep everything organized so we can focus on creating beautiful images without interruptions.

2. Feel Free to Bring a Friend

You are absolutely welcome to bring a friend, sister, or family member along for assistance.

They can help with:

  • Holding your bag or extra outfits
  • Adjusting your dress or train
  • Helping with touch-ups between shots
  • Providing emotional support and encouragement

Having someone you trust nearby often helps you feel more relaxed and confident — which always shows in photos.

3. Choosing the Right Outfit

Outdoor maternity photography looks best with softness, movement, and visible contours.

Best choices:

  • Flowy dresses or gowns that highlight your bump
  • Light to medium tones, pastels, or earthy colors
  • Stretchy, breathable fabrics

Avoid:

  • Busy prints or large logos
  • Very dark colors (especially black or deep navy), as they can hide the natural contours of your belly and body
  • Stiff or restrictive clothing

If your partner is joining, coordinating colors (rather than matching exactly) creates a cohesive, timeless look.

4. Hair Styling: Keep Your Face Open & Visible

This is one of the most important prep tips for maternity sessions.

Many poses involve:

  • Looking down at your belly
  • Gently cradling your bump
  • Tilting your head for soft, emotional moments

Because of this, please style your hair so it does not fall forward and cover your face.

5. Makeup: Natural & Timeless

Outdoor light is soft and flattering, but makeup helps define your features on camera.

  • Keep it natural and polished
  • Slightly more definition than everyday makeup is ideal
  • Matte or semi-matte finishes photograph best

If you’re booking professional makeup, let your artist know it’s for outdoor maternity photography.

6. Expressions: Soft, Calm, and Natural

You don’t need to “pose” or force expressions — the most beautiful maternity images come from gentle, relaxed emotion.

What works best:

  • Soft smiles rather than big, posed ones
  • Calm expressions while looking down at your belly
  • Closing your eyes for peaceful, intimate moments
  • Slow breaths and relaxed shoulders

Think of the session as a quiet moment of connection with your baby. I’ll guide you through each pose and let you know exactly where to look.

7. Trust the Process & Enjoy the Experience

My role is to guide you through posing, movement, and expressions so you never feel awkward or unsure. Just show up, take a deep breath, and enjoy this special moment.

Your maternity session is about celebrating strength, love, and anticipation — and those emotions always shine through naturally.
